As part of Maroondah Pre-School’s ongoing reflective practice journey to be cultural inclusive, Educators and Committee have unanimously chosen to incorporate the local Aboriginal language, Woiwurrung, spoken by the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, into our group names.
Taking cues from the symbolic reference of the Australian Aboriginal flag, the current group names Red and Yellow will now become Biik (land/country) and Ngawan (sun) respectively.
We see a number of benefits to the name change; to pay respect to the traditional owners of the land on which our kinder stands, to honour the First Peoples’ culture not only in our resources but evident in our way of thinking, to connect with and support Aboriginal people in our community, to educate others, to appreciate diversity and value the language for identity and historical purposes.
Ngoon godgin (thanks) for your support.
